June/July 2011 - Sizzling Summer in Macomb

Sizzling Summer in Macomb

We kicked off summer with a bang! We hosted lunches during finals – serving about 75 kids over two days! Then, we had a blast at the YFC Golf Outing. Attendees got to meet the Senior High Discipleship group, Roar, – and had they been needed, Campus Life Junior High teens offered to serve as well.

The first few days out of school hosted two photo scavenger hunts – one for Senior High and one for Junior High – fun times for kids and leaders! Lauren attended High Teen Camp, offering YFC teens an added place to build relationships/ Then, at Heritage Days, we hosted the Minute to Win It table and marched with nearly a dozen students with the VIBE Float (other students marched, just with other organizations).

Our Human Checker Board has been providing us with great fun. In the works are: Tic Tac Toe, 4 Square and a standard board-game board (“move 2 spaces”, etc). Gives a whole new meaning to “playing outside”.

We have more fun stuff coming up – including a trip to CIY-Move, a Christian conference being held in Roache Mo. We ask for your prayers for traveling mercies, but particularly for God ‘s presence to make a lifelong impression in these students.

This year’s YFC Student Leadership Team has had some changes and are as follows:

  • Student President: Justin Derry
  • YFC Student Vice President: Brandon Rossio
  • Secretary: Laurie Daniels
  • Team Manager: Alexis Aurelio
  • Underclassman Representative: Kassi Groff
  • Junior High Student President: Colton Markey

  • 6th grade Class Representative: Kelcie Cawthorn
  • 7th grade Class Representative: Hannah Moon
  • Team Manager: Hayley Coker

Our big news is the launching of Campus Life Senior High – launching September 12th! All the fun the Junior High kids have been having – expands to MHS.

Ways to Help

As the summer programs continue, we are beginning to run low on soda , water and snacks. It would be a huge blessing for donations of such items – they can be left on the porch at anytime. (If you are interested in joining the Cookie Ministry team, please let me know.

Consider joining the Senior High Campus Life team. We run Campus Life with multiple leaders, enabling small group attention and developing relationships. If you would like to know more, please call me.

Churches, we are getting ready to develop the pizza lunch partner schedules. If you have not already joined the team, please consider doing so – rotation is about once every 8-10 weeks, providing sodas and snacks, and people to serve & love on kids.

Mission Trip

Our summer began on a good spiritual note. Andrew, Abby, and myself helped with the Checkrow ChurchVBS the first week of June. It was a rockin' good time “Kicking it Old School.” Our son Andrew helped lead games and Abby and I worked as “roadies,” working directly with the kids. Pastor Joe Olson had some great messages on God being our Creator, our King, our Savior, our Redeemer, and our Rock! I believe there were over 50 kids there that week. What a good time investing in the spiritual lives of young people.

There have been many other adventures this summer. Opportunities to teach along the road of life have come through fishing trips, swimming parties, and many cookouts with Bushnell area teens. A few teens have began attending church and a couple have gotten back to church as a result. Praise be to God for His words of life!

Our most time consuming and eye opening trip came in the middle of June, our mission trip to Arkansas with Randy Randle and his dad, Vic. Randy is the pastor at the Macomb Assembly of God church. He organized the trip to Hillcrest Children's Home in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where we took 5 Bushnell teens and our whole family. Hillcrest Children’s Home is a private Christian residential child care campus established in 1944 as a national Assemblies of God child care ministry to abused and neglected children. Our mission is to rescue children from harm's way, restore broken hearts and spirits...rekindling hope for a child's bright future. “ This was a wonderful opportunity to serve these people, reflect on our own lives, be thankful for what God has provided for us, and how He is providing for the destitute. While we were there, we saw the love of Christ in the house parents, the chef and his staff, the maintenance crew, the woodworking staff, and the administrative staff. The people that work there care a bunch!

The Bushnell crew painted a fence, painted the trim in a large bathroom with 7 doorways, weed eated, mowed, did a bit of drywall mudding, lots of cleaning, and provided games with a devotion each night. The highlight of the week was probably the fishing adventure on Wednesday afternoon, where each child had the chance to reel in at least one catfish, most without help. Please pray for the teens that went on the trip, for they have a lot spiritual growing to do. Pray that they remember this time and that God will use it for His glory in the future. Thank you for your prayers and gifts towards this trip!

Our latest events have included Cornerstone Festival and a junior high trip to Fun City. We had 6 teens camp with us at Cornerstone and 4 helped clean up the festival grounds when it was over for 2 ½ days. It was a hot week filled with many concerts, conversations, and building time with each other. The day we went to Fun City, the heat was just right. We took 13 teens and met a few more when we got there. That was a good day!

We are very thankful and grateful for your ongoing support of the ministry to teens in the Bushnell area.

The Rodeffer's.

Hole-In-One worth $500 at 9th Annual Youth for Christ Golf Outing

On Saturday, June 6th, 2011, Youth for Christ-Western IL held its 9th
Annual Golf Outing hosted by Catch-A-Star Learning Center at WIU's Harry
Mussatto golf course. We had an exciting day of golf with a hole-in-one
on Hole 12. Joe Rodeffer of Abingdon used a 4-iron to drop the 166 yard
hole-in-one which was worth a $500 Visa Gift Card. Hole 12 was sponsored
by Bushnell Banking Center (a branch of Raritan State Bank). Witnessing
the hole-in-one were teammates Mark and Todd Rodeffer of Bushnell and Van
Steckleberg of Galesburg. Hole 12 was one of 3 auxiliary hole-in-one
contests in addition to the $15,000 Hole-In-One contest on Hole 17.
Special thanks to Purdum Gray and Ingledue for helping YFC organize the
Hole-In-One contests.

71 golfers came out and enjoyed ideal golfing weather, steep competition,
a light breakfast provided by Niemann’s County Market, plenty of
fellowship, complimentary beverages and snacks, and a grilled pork chop
and brat luncheon provided by Ludlum’s Food Mart. YFC Board members,
youth and staff from both Bushnell and Macomb locations were on hand to
help serve at the event. Special Thanks to Vicki Reimolds, Charlie Schade,
John Jones & Carl Knutson for helping withthe luncheon.

During the luncheon, prizes were awarded in 2 flights. This year, first
place in the first flight went to Team Roodhouse (George, John, Wes &
James Roodhouse). Team Macomb First Baptist (Jim McCain, Bryce Carper,
Rob Wallace and Idol Mitchell) and Team Rodeffer placed second and third
respectively. Team Coates (Randy Coates, Dave Davis, Andy Jackson and
Jerry Porter) took top honors in the second flight. Team Roth (Jacob
Roth, Matt Jackson, Tyler Norman & Nate Zier) placed second and Team
McDonough Power (Mike Smith, Eben Norton, Tim Norton & Doug Bear) placed
third.

This year 7 church teams competed for the coveted Church Team Traveling
Trophy. After spending the year at First Baptist Church of Littleton, the
Traveling Trophy once again returned to Macomb. Macomb First Baptist will
proudly display it for the next 12 months until June 2012.

Most importantly, through the participation by our golfers, hole sponsors
and prize donors, the funds raised will allow YFC to encourage and mentor
area teens.
